Building codes vary
Where a page mentions a code rule, such as stair riser limits or minimum roof slope for shingles, it summarizes the International Residential
Code as described in public handouts from building departments, which are cited on the page. States and cities adopt different editions and
amendments. Your local building department has the final word, and some work requires a permit and inspection.
Not a substitute for a professional
The calculators don’t size structural members, design foundations or check loads. For structural work, retaining walls, and anything where
failure could hurt someone, use a licensed engineer, architect or contractor.
