Quick answer: measure the lawn area in square feet, add about 5% for cuts and waste, then divide by what one roll or pallet covers. A typical roll covers about 10 ft² (University of Maryland Extension). Pallet sizes vary by grower: Virginia Cooperative Extension says a pallet of standard rolls usually holds 450 to 700 ft², and 450 or 500 ft² pallets are common, so ask your supplier. A 1,000 ft² lawn plus 5% is 1,050 ft², which is 105 rolls or 3 pallets.
The Sod Calculator handles odd shapes and pallet sizes. This guide shows the math and the steps that decide whether the sod survives.
The formula
Area (ft²) = length × width (split odd shapes into rectangles)
Sod needed = area × 1.05
Rolls = sod needed ÷ 10
Pallets = sod needed ÷ pallet coverage, rounded up
Only buy as much as you can lay quickly. Sod is a living product and should be installed soon after delivery.
Worked example: a 40 × 25 ft front yard
- Area: 40 × 25 = 1,000 ft².
- With 5%: 1,000 × 1.05 = 1,050 ft².
- Rolls at about 10 ft²: 105 rolls.
- Pallets at 450 ft²: 1,050 ÷ 450 = 2.33, so 3 pallets. At 500 ft², 2.1, also 3 pallets.
Sod needed by lawn size
All figures include 5% extra. Pallet counts are shown for 450 ft² and 500 ft² pallets because suppliers differ.
| Lawn area | With 5% | Pallets (450 ft²) | Pallets (500 ft²) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 ft² | 525 ft² | 2 | 2 |
| 1,000 ft² | 1,050 ft² | 3 | 3 |
| 2,500 ft² | 2,625 ft² | 6 | 6 |
| 5,000 ft² | 5,250 ft² | 12 | 11 |
| 10,890 ft² (¼ acre) | 11,435 ft² | 26 | 23 |
A quarter acre is 43,560 ÷ 4 = 10,890 ft². This is the total lot, so subtract the house, driveway and beds first.
Prepare the soil first
The University of Maryland Extension’s new-lawn guide covers the key preparation steps. In brief:
- Sod roots into the soil beneath it, so loosen and grade the area, remove debris and rocks, and fix drainage problems first.
- The guide cites sod roots that grow 2 to 3 weeks to establish, so the soil under the sod matters.
- A soil test can tell you whether the soil needs lime, fertilizer or compost.
- Roll the surface lightly and water it so the soil is firm and moist but not muddy before laying.
Your topsoil needs are a separate calculation. Use the Topsoil Calculator if you’re adding soil.
Laying sod
- Start along a straight edge, like a driveway or walkway.
- Stagger the seams like bricks and press the edges together without overlapping or stretching.
- Cut with a sharp knife around curves, sprinklers and beds.
- Roll or tamp to remove air pockets and ensure contact with the soil.
- Water immediately and keep the sod and soil moist.
Maryland Extension notes that a roll of sod is roughly 10 ft² and weighs about 20 to 40 lb, depending on soil and moisture. A 1,000 ft² order is therefore well over a ton of material, so plan labor and a place to stage rolls.
Watering and the first weeks
New sod needs steady moisture while roots grow into the soil beneath it. Check by lifting a corner after a week or two: if it resists, roots are taking hold. Avoid heavy foot traffic until it is established, and follow the grower’s or your local extension’s mowing and fertilizer guidance for your grass type.
Sod vs seed
Sod gives an instant lawn and works better on slopes where seed can wash away, but costs more and needs quick installation. Seed is cheaper and offers more grass varieties but takes longer to establish. The choice depends on budget, timing and region.
Common mistakes
- Not adding the 5%. Curves and edges waste sod.
- Delaying installation. Rolls left stacked can heat up and dry out.
- Laying on hard or uneven soil.
- Letting seams dry.
- Ordering by total lot area. Subtract the house, driveway and beds.
Frequently asked questions
How many square feet is a pallet of sod?
It varies by grower. Virginia Cooperative Extension gives 450 to 700 ft² for a pallet of standard rolls, and 450 or 500 ft² pallets are common. Ask your supplier before you order.
How many rolls of sod per 1,000 sq ft?
About 100 rolls at 10 ft² per roll, or 105 with a 5% allowance.
How much does a roll of sod weigh?
About 20 to 40 pounds, according to University of Maryland Extension, depending on moisture and soil.
How much sod for a quarter acre?
10,890 ft² plus 5% is 11,435 ft², which is 26 pallets at 450 ft² or 23 at 500 ft².
When is the best time to lay sod?
It depends on the grass type and climate. Your local extension office can tell you the right season for your area.
